Event highlights
96 Satirical Drawings from the 1920s–1930s Alongside Kitazawa Rakuten's Picture Magazine Originals
First published in 1905, "Tokyo Puck" was Japan's first full-color satirical cartoon magazine. This exhibition focuses on 96 original illustrations from the museum's collection, created for the magazine's third and fourth publication runs during the 1920s and 1930s. Together, these works capture a tumultuous era—from post-earthquake reconstruction following the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake through the Great Depression and the march toward war—with sharp wit and incisive perspective.
Marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Kitazawa Rakuten, the magazine's founder and Japan's first professional cartoonist, the exhibition also presents a special display of his original art for "Kodomo no Tomo", where he served as chief illustrator. Visitors can appreciate the warm, gentle appeal of his children's illustrations alongside his biting social satire.
