POKOTABI / A little place. A worthwhile detour.

About POKOTABI

The best part of a trip is sometimes the place you had not planned to find.

A small detour can become the story of your day

A café above a busy street. A ramen counter behind an unassuming entrance. A neighbourhood festival you discover on the way to lunch. Japan is full of places that reward a little curiosity. Yet finding a place on a map and feeling ready to walk through its door are two different things.

A name, a star rating and an address cannot tell the whole story. You may want to know what to order, whether lunch is served, how payment works, or what the room feels like. When that information is scattered across languages and websites, a promising discovery can become a place you simply walk past.

POKOTABI is built around that moment: helping a place you notice become a place you can confidently consider visiting.

From a list of places to a sense of place

We bring restaurant and café introductions together with menus, photographs, opening hours, directions and useful visiting details. Our neighbourhood guides and event coverage add the surroundings: what else to explore, what is happening nearby, and how one stop can fit into a day.

Not every place needs a long story. Some have a distinctive menu; others are best understood through their atmosphere, practical details or the experiences people describe. We aim to let the available information shape the introduction, rather than make every venue sound the same.

Japan, in a language you can use

Our multilingual pages are designed to make discovery easier across language barriers. We keep original names where they help you recognise a sign, and provide translated information where it helps you plan. Translations support understanding; original notices and information from the venue or organiser remain important when details change.

We do not present every introduction as a personal visit, and a listing is not automatically an official website. POKOTABI prepares independent introductions unless a venue’s participation is clearly identified. Sources, corrections and clear distinctions between information and promotion matter to that approach.

A connection that works for local businesses, too

A good place deserves more than a pin on a map. We are developing ways for businesses and organisers to check their information, discuss a dedicated venue website, and propose places or events for consideration. Commercial partnerships should make useful information easier to find, with paid promotion clearly identified.

Our ambition is a connected guide to Japan where travellers can discover something worthwhile and local businesses can tell their story more clearly. One place leads to a neighbourhood. A neighbourhood leads to a new plan. A small detour becomes part of your trip.
