HIGHLIGHTS

Event highlights

Enjoy the mansion and autumn roses while learning about the garden

The Western-style garden at Kyu-Furukawa Gardens features around 200 rose bushes across approximately 100 varieties, with a Western-style mansion standing beyond them. The official event information describes autumn roses as having rich colours and a strong fragrance. Take time to notice the colours and scents as you stroll and enjoy the scenery created by the mansion and gardens.

For a tour that introduces the names and characteristics of the rose varieties, try the Kyu-Furukawa Rose Collection smartphone app. It provides information on around 100 varieties in the gardens and lets you save your own rose photos by variety. You can add multiple photos of the same variety to update your collection, turning your walk into a rose album of your own. A smartphone is required, and data charges are the user’s responsibility.

Garden tours led by volunteers focus mainly on the Japanese garden. During the festival, tours start at 2 p.m. on weekdays and at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekends and public holidays, and last approximately 60 minutes. Meet near the stroller parking area in front of the Service Center. No reservation is required. Places are offered on a first-come, first-served basis to around 20 people. Participation is free, but admission is charged separately. Tours may be cancelled in wet weather or other adverse conditions.

An early-morning Garden Walk is also planned, during which visitors can enter the flower beds and experience the scent of the roses while listening to explanations from garden staff. It will take place on October 24, 28 and 31, 2026. Each session meets at 8 a.m. and lasts approximately 60 minutes. Advance registration was required, and registration closed at 5 p.m. on October 15. The conditions differ from those for the garden tours that are still available, so choose the activity that suits your visit.

The Autumn Rose Concert, featuring a clarinet quartet, was held on October 18 on the lawn. Each approximately 30-minute performance required no advance booking and was free to attend, with garden admission charged separately. The performance dates for Quartetto MOMO, listed as the performers, have passed. For future visits, consider activities with dates still to come, such as garden tours and the market.

Choose a market date and activity time

The pop-up Rose Garden Market runs daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the festival, from the area in front of the garden information sign to near the mansion. Rose-themed goods are sold every day, but food vendors and activities vary by date. The market may be cancelled in severe weather, so check vendor dates and plan your visit if there is something in particular you hope to find.

Gelato from Dalciano will be available during the festival, except on October 13, 20 and 27 and November 4. Chiffon cakes from chantilly will be available on October 25 and November 1, while the Hitsuji no Kitchen Car by AJITO.N is scheduled for October 24 and 25. Compare the dates to choose what you would like to try along with your autumn rose walk.

For a hands-on activity, try cherry-blossom dyeing. Sessions will take place on October 31, November 2 and 3, at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day. Each session lasts approximately 30–40 minutes. A handkerchief costs JPY 2,000 and a stole JPY 3,500, with a limit of 10 participants per session on a first-come, first-served basis. Check the fee and capacity when choosing an item and time.

The digital stamp rally “Japanese and Western Garden Tour Book,” marking 70 years since the gardens opened to the public, runs through December 28. Collect stamps around the gardens while learning about their history and origins. Visitors who collect all the stamps can enter a prize draw. Digital content is also available to those who do not win, but the giveaway may end before the event period if the limited number of prizes is claimed. A smartphone is required, and data charges are the user’s responsibility.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m. Admission is JPY 150 for adults and JPY 70 for visitors aged 65 and over. Children of elementary-school age and younger, and junior high school students who live or study in Tokyo, enter free. Holders of qualifying disability certificates and one accompanying person are also eligible for free admission. Entry to the Western-style mansion costs extra; no price is given in the event information. Tripods, monopods and selfie sticks are not permitted anywhere in the gardens, including the Japanese garden, during the event. Activities and some services may be cancelled or changed due to weather or other circumstances, so check the latest official information before visiting if there is a particular event you want to attend.
