Tracing Mural Expression Through Fresco Techniques and Three-Dimensional Works
Painter Koji Kinutani (1943–2025) studied the classical Western mural technique of fresco (affresco) while studying abroad in Italy in 1971. After returning to Japan, he developed his own distinctive approach by applying fresco underpaintings to canvas.
Throughout his career, Kinutani drew inspiration from a diverse range of walls, from ancient cave paintings to the Berlin Wall. For him, the act of painting on a wall was an attempt to liberate humanity from the obstacles and hardships standing before it. Through paintings utilizing these techniques and three-dimensional works developed from them, this exhibition reconsiders the fundamental meaning of painting on walls.
