HIGHLIGHTS
Event highlights
Follow the garden lights from the path of painted lanterns
The venue is Kikyo no Sato, located in front of the gate to Koshō-ji Temple, which is associated with Akechi Mitsuhide. Yume Narie began as a winter community event in Kameoka and now decorates the garden and the foot of the satoyama with painted lanterns and illuminations. Rather than simply viewing the lights from a distance, visitors can walk around the grounds and discover the different displays along the way.
One of the highlights of the stroll is a path lined with painted lanterns for about 100 metres. The official guide describes this lantern-lit walk as a “100-metre story.” The glowing lanterns depict love and dreams, and visitors can take in the artwork on each one as they make their way along the path.
In the bamboo grove, visitors can enjoy a scene created by the interplay of illuminations and light displays. The grove’s lighting offers a different atmosphere from the soft glow of the painted lanterns. As you explore the grounds, you can take in the changing colours and effects of the lights.
The Dream-Coloured Illumi Garden is filled with lights in a range of colours, while the Kikyo Akari Garden uses lights to portray balloon flowers blooming in a night garden. These gardens offer a different experience from the lantern path and bamboo grove, letting visitors compare a variety of light displays.
The Christmas illuminations decorate the foot of the satoyama with ornaments bearing wishes made “to the stars.” Seasonal decorations join the painted lanterns, bamboo grove and garden lights to create a scene befitting a winter night.
A tree and collaborative illuminations, too
A 5-metre-tall Christmas tree will stand at the entrance. The grounds also include a photo spot called “Angel Wings”; visitors are asked to take turns when using it for photos. Please be considerate of others when stopping by during your walk around the garden.
The official guide describes the collaborative illumination with Heian Jogakuin University as being in its fourth year. Alongside the painted lanterns, bamboo grove, garden of light and Christmas decorations, the event brings together light displays with different themes in one venue.
The official guide lists admission as JPY 1,000 for adults (junior high school students and older), JPY 500 for children, and free for infants aged 4 and under. Another listing, however, gives weekday prices of JPY 800 for adults and JPY 400 for children. As the prices differ, check the official information before visiting.
Pets are allowed on the grounds. Visitors are asked to be considerate of others and to take pet waste home. Please also avoid damaging or picking animals and plants, and treat the facilities with care.
From Kameoka Station on the JR Sagano Line, take Keihan Kyoto Kotsu Bus route 40 to Inokura, then walk for 5 minutes. By car, the venue is about 15 minutes from the Kameoka Interchange on the Kyoto Jukan Expressway; the official information lists free parking. As this is an evening event, it is a good idea to plan your visit with the 8:30 p.m. admission closing time in mind.
