There is no time limit for bouts at this tournament. The bull that retreats loses, so the result is decided by which bull gives way, not by a time limit. One of the pleasures of watching is following the action and seeing how the bulls face off. The tournament starts at noon and is scheduled to finish around 2 p.m.

Uwajima bullfighting has a history rooted in the region. Bullfighting in the Nanyo area is said to have begun in the latter half of the 17th century, when two bulls given to local fishermen from Fukuura in thanks for rescuing a Dutch ship adrift in the Uwajima Sea fought each other. Alongside the rules and techniques, visitors can learn about the tradition’s long history in the area.

The official website says the bulls receive careful daily care and train with bullfighting trainers before the tournament. Admission is ¥3,000 for adults and free for junior high school students and younger. Advance tickets are also available, with different sales locations depending on the ticket type. General advance tickets for high school students and older are available at FamilyMart. Senior and disability-discount tickets are sold at Uwajima Municipal Bullfighting Arena, Uwajima City Tourist Information Center and Roadside Station Kisaiya Hiroba. According to the official website, online ticket reservations ended with the May 2026 tournament, and sales have moved to FamilyMart. All ticket types are also available from the sales counter on the day of the tournament. If buying in advance, check the sales location for your ticket type; if buying on the day, use the venue’s ticket counter.
