A Zelkova More Than 500 Years Old Becomes a Tree of Winter Light

The star of the event is the Asamai Zelkova, a symbol of the Hiraka area of Yokote. This more than 500-year-old tree, commonly known as Tsukinoki, is lit up as a Christmas tree about 40 meters tall. Its impressive size is another highlight; it is described as one of the tallest Christmas trees in Japan made from a living tree.

When you arrive, try looking up at the whole tree from a little way away to take in its height and branching shape. Following the outline of a single tree makes it easier to appreciate its scale of about 40 meters. The sight of this zelkova, cherished locally as a natural monument designated by Akita Prefecture, dressed in winter lights is also memorable.

More than 30,000 LEDs illuminate not only the tree itself but also the surrounding area. Take in the lights around the tree as well as those on its branches to enjoy a wide spread of illumination centered on the zelkova. The lights transform the venue into a dreamlike setting.
